It couldn’t be clearer: the oil and gas sector can’t be trusted to regulate themselves.

New research from Environment and Climate Change Canada found that greenhouse gas emissions from oil sands in Alberta are up to 65% higher than what the industry reports. [1] With up to 31 million tonnes of polluting emissions going unreported by the industry, this is yet another sign that we urgently need an ambitious Emissions Cap policy.

Asarial, the federal government will table the first draft of Emissions Cap regulations in the coming months, so now is the time to fight to make the policy as strong and airtight as it can be. [2] But we know that Big Oil lobbyists are doing everything they can to weaken the legislation and create loopholes that will allow them to keep polluting. [3]

That’s why we’re kicking our Emissions Cap campaign into high gear with a massive Day of Action at the end of May, timed to ramp up the pressure on key Liberal MPs as they finalize the draft policy.

To kick it off, you’re invited to our Organizing Call for a Bold Emissions Cap on Tuesday, May 2nd at 4pm PT / 7pm ET. In this call, we’ll share how you can join the fight for the climate policy we deserve. We need as many people as possible to join us in this final push to hold Big Oil accountable. Will you be there?

We may have to fight tooth and nail to drown out Big Oil’s lobbying, but together, we can make sure the Liberals keep their climate promises. We know a majority of Canadians support an effective cap on oil and gas emissions. [4,5] And the Leadnow community has been harnessing that support to pressure the government to deliver. We’ve hosted calling parties, submitted thousands of comments to the federal emissions cap consultation, met with dozens of our MPs in ridings across the country, and taken our message to Cabinet Ministers with digital and in-person tactics.

From your actions over the past few months, it couldn’t be clearer that the Leadnow community is ready to go all-in for the future of our planet. With the Emissions Cap’s first draft on the horizon, this is our last chance to push for the strong policy we need – and it all starts at our call on May 2nd.

During this call, you’ll hear more details about our plans and learn about how you can get involved. So, Asarial, will you RSVP to the Organizing Call for a Bold Emissions Cap?
