The Senate and Asarial

Leadnow

Asarial, a new law that could bring real financial support for people with disabilities in Canada living in poverty is currently slowly inching its way through the Senate. [1]

Called Bill C-22, the law would introduce the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) for people with disabilities living in poverty. But the process to get it passed – and to get crucial support for people who need it — has been dragging on. [2] Every delay means another day where people with disabilities are living without support that’d help ensure they live with dignity.

Senators are taking public input on the bill right now. If we want to make sure they move to pass the bill quickly — we need to get loud so they hear our message.

So here’s the plan. If we raise $4600, we can buy a raft of ads calling on them to pass Bill C-22 — on social media and in the newsletter read by Senators and their staff every day.

Senators aren’t used to being the target of public pressure, so this could help drive home our message to act fast and pass Bill C-22 now. But we can’t do it without your support. Will you chip in now?

If passed, Bill C-22 will be the first federal income supplement for working age Canadians with disabilities. While not perfect, it would help top up provincial and territorial supports to bring people up to at least the poverty line. [3]

At the heart of Leadnow is a belief, shared by all of us reading this email, in building a society where everyone has what we need to not only survive, but thrive. But right now, people with disabilities are twice as likely to live in poverty, and make up 41% of the low-income population in Canada. [4] It’s unacceptable.

Bill C-22 passed with unanimous cross party support in the House. It’s time for Senate to do the same. Nearly 14,000 of us have emailed Senate in the last month — now let’s take our pressure public. Will you chip in to make sure Senate gets our message that people with disabilities can’t wait any longer?
