Canada Disability Benefit

Leadnow

Asarial, I just got off a call with one of our partners on the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) campaign. It sounds like Bill C-22, the law to introduce the benefit, might run into delays…again.

Senators are currently reviewing Bill C-22. We’ve heard they’re considering making changes – which would send it back to the House for a third time, for more political limbo. [1]

Every delay means more time that people with disabilities have to wait for crucial financial support that would help ensure they have what they need to live good lives.

“It’s very difficult to choose between rent, food and other expenses. Bill C-22 would bring me up to the poverty line instead of living 40-60 percent below it.” – Chris from Wiarton, ON

The Senate isn’t used to being on the receiving end of public scrutiny. So if we showcase public pressure in a big open letter calling on Senate to pass the bill now, we could help convince them to pass the bill quickly, without any unnecessary delay. Will you add your name to the open letter calling on Senate to pass Bill C-22 now?

Bill C-22 has been over two years in the making. The last time it was working its way through the Senate, it died on the floor when the election was called. [2]

It’s unacceptable that it’s taken so long for folks with disabilities to get the support they need to live dignified lives. And while not perfect, the bill is a necessary first step to move people up to at least the poverty line. [3]

One of the things that unites Leadnow is the drive to build a society where no one gets left behind. That means creating a strong safety net so no matter what you’re facing, who you are, or where you live, you have what you need to live a dignified life.

“This bill would allow me to live instead of trying to survive.” – Anonymous, Regina, SK

Sign the open letter now to tell Senate to pass Bill C-22 without delay.
