Ceasefire now

Leadnow

Dear Asarial,

In a rare act of dissent, 33 MPs across party lines signed an open letter demanding Canada call for a ceasefire to Israel’s assault on Gaza this past week. [1,2]

The call for a ceasefire couldn’t come quickly enough. As of today, 5,000 Palestinian civilians have been killed by the Israeli military – more than 40% of them children. [3] Asarial, the scale of grief and loss of civilian lives breaks my heart.

With the situation in Gaza growing more desperate by the hour, the international community must act quickly to hold Israel to account and protect civilian lives. Asarial, will you send an email to your MP calling on them to add their voice with the growing chorus of MPs who are calling for Canada to demand a ceasefire?

Here’s our original email with more information:

Dear Asarial,

The situation in Israel and Palestine is evolving with each passing day – but what we know right now is this: even as Israelis mourn their loved ones and pray for the return of hostages in the wake of Hamas’s brutal attack, the state of Israel is launching an unprecedented and catastrophic assault on civilians in Gaza. [1]

Since October 7, the Israeli military government has cut off food, water, electricity and fuel to the 2.3 million people living in Gaza. [2] Over a million Gazans have been ordered to leave their homes – but with checkpoints closed and Israel bombing civilian convoys, many are trapped with nowhere to go. [3-5] Yesterday, hundreds of Palestinian civilians were killed during a bomb strike on a hospital in Gaza – and as of today, the death toll has risen to 3,785. A third of those killed are children. [6,7]

These are war crimes. Israel’s strategy of collective punishment – in which Palestinian civilians are targeted as retribution for Hamas’s actions – is a war crime. [8]

With the situation in Gaza growing more desperate by the hour, the international community must act quickly to hold Israel to account, uphold human rights and protect civilian lives, including the most vulnerable: seniors, persons with disabilities, women and children. Asarial, will you send a letter to your MP calling on them to demand a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine?

At Leadnow, we condemn all violence and war crimes against civilians and grieve for the thousands of civilian lives lost in Israel and Palestine and millions displaced in Palestine. We unequivocally condemn anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and racism. Our vision is of a world where human rights are protected and human life is sacrosanct.

We are firm in our belief that Palestinian armed groups, including Hamas, must be held accountable for their deliberate and horrific attacks on civilians, and that safe passage for the Israeli hostages must be ensured.

Such violence against civilians can never be justified – and simultaneously, it cannot be called unprovoked. May 15 this year marked 75 years since the Nakba, the “Catastrophe,” in which 750,000 Palestinian people fled or were forcibly expelled from their communities. [9] Since then, Israel has pursued what many have termed an apartheid against Palestinian people; emptying Palestinian neighbourhoods and forcibly displacing entire communities, restricting Palestinians’ right to return home, and forcing many into unlivable conditions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. [10-12]

Our understanding of the current conflict between Israel and Palestine must account for this historical context; and our calls for ceasefire must include a peaceful resolution to this decades-long conflict that honours the rights and humanity of both the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.

The Canadian government must call for an immediate ceasefire to prevent any further loss of life. It must oppose Israel’s illegal restriction of water, food, medicine, and electricity to Gazans, and demand a humanitarian corridor into Gaza. Asarial, will you send an email to your MP now demanding they call for a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine to prevent any further loss of innocent lives?
