“More money than God”

Next week, Liberal Cabinet Ministers are holding a retreat to discuss the cost of living crisis and making life more affordable. [1]

Asarial, we have an opportunity to ensure a windfall tax — a tax to make Big Oil pay their fair share into the public purse — is at the top of their agenda. During the pandemic, the Liberals implemented a windfall tax for banks and insurance companies who were making significant profits. [2] They know the importance of this tool — and how much money it can bring in to fund what we need: strong public services, affordable housing and a just transition that leaves no one behind.

Imagine you’re a Liberal Cabinet Minister and on your way to your retreat you take a look at your inbox. It’s flooded with hundreds of emails from voters demanding you levy a windfall tax on Big Oil’s excess profits. You head into your meeting, and these emails are all your colleagues can talk about. It’s sure to propel a windfall tax to the top of their list of discussion items.

But to have that kind of impact we need everyone reading this email to send a message to key Cabinet Ministers before their retreat starts on Monday. Will you send a message now? It’ll only take a minute.

With hope,
Simran and Jesse for Leadnow

Here’s our original email for more information:

Dear Asarial,

A breaking investigation revealed that despite seeing record-breaking profits, Big Oil successfully lobbied the federal government and won an additional $2.6 billion in public money. [1]

Oil and gas companies, who, “make more money than God” are making off like bandits by profiting massively from torching our planet — while the rest of us struggle to make ends meet. [2] Your pain at the pump is being funneled towards their bottom line — and so is money from the public purse. [3,4]

Big Oil may have cash-lined pockets to lobby the government seven times a day, [5] but we have people power.

If we flood key Cabinet Ministers with tens of thousands of messages demanding that the federal government stop giving public money to oil and gas corporations and instead make Big Oil pay their fair share with a windfall tax, it could be enough to force them to act. Will you send a message now, while key Cabinet Ministers are still feeling the heat from the investigation?

It doesn’t have to be this way. A windfall tax on Big Oil’s excess profits means mega-rich oil and gas corporations will be forced to pay their fair share into the public purse rather than taking from it. Taxing excess profits could fund a just transition away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy for a greener, fairer, and more sustainable economy that works for everyone — not just Big Oil.

We already know this is possible. Last year, the UK set an excess profits tax at a whopping 25% and it’s projected to raise more than $8 billion CAD in just one year. [6] And in the last two months of 2022, they actually increased it. [7]

It’s a sign that the fossil fuel industry can no longer get away with hoarding their profits while everyday people struggle to put food on the table.

Along with our friends at 350 Canada and Environmental Defence, we’ve already delivered your petition with over 15,000 signatures to the House of Commons. Now, it’s time to turn up the heat and show Prime Minister Trudeau and Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, that we’re tired of Big Oil keeping our environment and our wallets hostage. Will you send a message now?

With hope,
