Conservative dogwhistles

Leadnow

Asarial, it’s a scary time for queer and trans people in Canada. Moments of anti-queer and trans aggression have been continuously present in the news – many from top Conservative leaders across the country – all pointing to a rise in the normalization of the far-right targeting the queer and trans community. [1,2]

Conservative leaders Danielle Smith and Pierre Poilievre came under fire for posing with an anti-queer and trans activist wearing a “Straight Pride” shirt. Their response? Non-apologies and blanket statements claiming that support for this hate messaging “obviously” didn’t align with their values. [3,4] This is their way to have it both ways, to not alienate moderate swing voters, while winking to their base. This is a classic Trumpian tactic to say ‘I can’t say this too explicitly, but I actually agree with this guy.’

We won’t tolerate the Conservative Party of Canada playing both sides on issues of queer and trans hate. Which is why we’re going to force them to stop putting out empty platitudes and to make a clear statement in support of queer and trans rights.

We’re launching a petition to Pierre Poilievre, to officially recognize queer and trans rights in the Conservative Party constitution. If enough people sign, we could force the Conservatives to take a stand, and show them we won’t take lip service when it comes to the lives and safety of the queer and trans community. Will you sign the petition now?

Whether it’s Pierre Poilievre supporting the New Brunswick Conservatives’s anti-trans policy, or Conservative MPs rubbing shoulders with anti-queer and trans activists – by aligning themselves with people spreading hate, Conservatives in Canada are sending a clear message to their supporters. [5,6] That homophobia and transphobia are not only tolerated but also accepted within their party and vision for the country’s future. [7]

The Conservatives already have a detailed list of principles that govern their policies – from support for a constitutional monarchy to a belief in free trade – written in their constitution. [8] If what they say about hateful anti-queer and trans values is true – if it truly doesn’t align with their own values as a party – then it should be a no-brainer to end the debate and enshrine those values into their constitution.

It’s moments like these, when the rights of queer and trans people are threatened, that people across Canada can stand together in the face of oppression. We can show Pierre Poilievre and any Conservative party member looking to sweep hate under the rug, that we won’t accept empty words for political gain.

Now, let’s stand with the queer and trans community. Will you add your name to the petition calling on Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre to definitively oppose homophobia and transphobia, and recognize queer and trans rights in the Conservative Party constitution?
