2023 budget + a life saving benefit

Leadnow

Asarial, we know these are hard times. With the rising costs of living across the country, it’s becoming harder for many of us to put food on the table. And more than ever, people with disabilities are falling through the cracks.

In 2022, the federal government adopted Bill C22 — an act to reduce poverty and support the financial security of persons with disabilities by establishing the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB). [1,2] Last year Leadnow and allied organizations campaigned for the Liberals to add Bill C22 to the 2022 budget. And when they didn’t, many Canadians with disabilities were forced to live without support, far below the poverty line for another year.

We all know someone with disabilities, a family member, or a friend, and we are all ourselves only one diagnosis or one accident away from being forced to live below the poverty line. Right now, provincial/territorial disability assistance programs don’t provide adequate support to ensure persons with disabilities can live their lives with dignity and security. [3, 4] This federal benefit will be a lifesaver for millions — we can’t let our government stall any longer.

Our window of opportunity is small: the Federal 2023 Budget will be decided in the coming weeks. A groundswell of public support could send a loud and clear message: people with disabilities will not get left behind. Will you add your voice and call for Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland to fund the Canadian Disability Benefit in the 2023 Budget?

As the affordability crisis worsens, it’s never been more critical for the federal government to ensure everyone can live their lives with dignity and security — and if funded bill would help lift millions of people out of abject disability poverty.

Bill C22 has multi-party support and when Parliament resumes at the end of January, the federal government must commit to funding it this year in the 2023 budget. Until they put their money where their mouth is, we will hold them accountable.

When the Liberals sit down at the decision-making table we need them to designate funding to Canadians with disabilities. If we put pressure on Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, then she will prioritize funding the benefit, because she knows we are all watching and our votes matter.

Together, we can make sure the Liberal government takes action and funds the Canadian Disability Benefit. Add your name now to send a message to Minister Freeland that all Canadians deserve to live with dignity.
