| No way in hell.
That was my first thought when I saw yesterday’s headline — that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has applied to build a bitumen pipeline through northern BC.
Asarial, it’s the worst kind of déja vu. Thousands of people in B.C., and all across Canada, fought for years to kill the lookalike Northern Gateway pipeline. Indigenous nations took to the courts and frontlines, and won a historic ban forever protecting BC’s northern coast from oil tankers.
Now, Premier Smith wants Prime Minister Carney to reverse the tanker ban and greenlight her latest pipe dream — dragging us backward on climate at the worst possible time.
Here’s my worry: Carney’s been working hard to stay in Smith’s good books — which means he might entertain her proposal, if only to avoid rocking the boat.
That’s why we need to let Carney know — in no uncertain terms — Smith’s pipe dream can’t come true. Asarial, will you sign the petition calling on Carney to reject Alberta’s pipeline proposal, and protect the BC coast — and our future?
I’LL SIGN THE PETITION TO REJECT SMITTH’S BC PIPELINE
Asarial, this project is a direct threat to Indigenous sovereignty and a continuation of a long history of government efforts to override their consent. And already the First Nations on BC’s North Coast have raised the alarm and said they won’t support Alberta’s pipeline proposal “now or ever.” It’s time for us to speak up in solidarity.
For years, the Leadnow community has fought to keep new oil pipelines from breaking ground. We stood arm-in-arm with our allies in opposition to Enbridge’s Northern Gateway project in 2014. And when the TransMountain pipeline project was heating up in 2017, we mobilized in force — we packed MP’s offices, flooded consultations and helped turn public opinion.
We knew then what we know now: that fossil fuel projects are a bad investment. You need to look no further than the billions wasted on the TransMountain project.
It’s time to invest in the renewable energy transition and projects that are in the interest of people, not profits. Asarial, will you add your name to the petition calling on Prime Minister Carney to reject Smith’s pipeline plan — and invest instead in projects for Canada’s future?
I’LL SIGN THE PETITION TO REJECT SMITTH’S BC PIPELINE
In rage and solidarity, Kate and Peter for Leadnow
